June’s birthday

juneIt was June Powell’s first birthday away from her Blackstone home, which she left a few months ago for her new residence in Imperial Plaza in Richmond, and it was the first chance in many years for members of the Powell family to see each other. My daughter Shannon performed in the auditorium for the family and residents that dropped in. But there was one moment that brought tears to my eyes.

At the end of the performance Shannon sang Amazing Grace for June (with her dauhter Jan looking on). This was the song that Shannon sang at Jimmy Powell’s funeral, who died a few years ago, and I cried then too—but I was not alone. And here it was back again, that Amazing Grace, how sweet it is. You always know when grace is near: life gets very, very real. And you cry.
